Wave Meditation

Light, Water, Wind ~ A Moment in Time

Last January, I had the good fortune of staying in Hopetown, located on Elbow Cay, a very small Bahamian island, just 6 miles long. It was there that I began to immerse myself in the waves photographically. All of the images in the show were taken at two beaches on the east side of the island, which is where I spent most my time while there. There was nothing between where I stood on the beach and the continent of Africa, just endless waves.

I was taken by the waves, touched by the waves, moved by the waves, lost in the waves.  It became a meditation from early morning before sunrise through to sunset every day. To my delight I discovered that with my camera, generally shooting at 1/5000th of a second I was able to capture moments of wave experience that are simply not visible to the human eye because it all happens so fleetingly.  It was as if I was having a conversation with the waves. I was witnessing the sheer miracle of wave nature, each and every one a unique and unrepeatable momentary experience.  It drew me into the mystery of ocean meeting land, wave after wave. I found myself simply in the flow of the ocean, captivated, receptive and responding with my camera.  While I slept at night, the waves continued to rise and fall through my consciousness……..

In these days I was struck by the constantly changing conditions of light, wind, clouds, tides and currents and how they repeatedly altered the waves and the shape of the beach.  The truth of impermanence, played out so beautifully, right before my very own eyes.

It truly was an endless display of blues and greens and sparkling forming and dissolving back into the sea.

The ocean.......... the waves.......... moved something within me that I could not name. It was as though each time I was in the presence of the ocean, something in me came home. It enlivened my spirit in a way that nothing could. I felt vital and refreshed.

While immersed in this beauty, I felt such a strong love of the vast ocean and its mysteries. The waves were not only a healing and renewing presence, but they were a call for us all to wake up and protect this precious ocean and planet. I hope that these images touch  something in you in the way they have touched me.
