This image was taken on Inlé Lake in central Myanmar (Burma). This was my first evening there. I was deeply touched by the magic of this scene; time seemed to stand still as I witnessed this man fishing in the old traditional way.
This bridge is located on Malenge Island, one of the Tongean Islands in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The bridge was built several years before we arrived so that the children who lived in a nearby "Sea Gypsy" village could walk to their school located two kilometers away on the main island. I named this image "Trust" as the villagers, young and old alike, were undaunted as they walked across the bridge even though there were many planks missing. I would never have ventured onto it myself! For me, this image expresses the trust that we need as we walk step by step through our lives.
This image was taken on Lake Tonlé Sap which is near Siem Reap in Cambodia. The fisherman appeared from nowhere, and for me this was an experience of timelessness.
After a long boat journey down the River Ou in northern Laos, the sun began to set and this beautiful view opened up. The river was like liquid gold and the reflection of that lone tree was stunning. What a pristine moment!
Coming home late in the afternoon from a floating market near Can Tho in the Mekong Delta area of southern Vietnam, I saw this fisherman casting his net, which so beautifully caught by the sunlight.
On the edge of Lake Tonlé Sapp near Kampong Khleang in Cambodia, there is an area known as the flooded forest. During the rainy season, the waters rise some thirty feet. During the dry season, the local women have organized themselves to give visitors to the area an opportunity to see the flooded forest close up in traditional flat-bottomed boats. I was so surprised to see this gathering of women, who had created a business community together. For me this was a visual feast that came out of nowhere!
Before going to these famous waterfalls (Khone Phapheng) located on the mighty Mekong River in southern Laos, I had heard of the fearless fishermen who use a rope in order to get to the central area of the river where fish are more plentiful. We watched this fisherman for a long time. Shortly after I took this photo, his net caught on some rocks. After about an hour of trying to free it, he gave up and headed back to shore with nothing show for his efforts.
As we waited for sunrise at the southern edge of Don Khon Island, southern Laos in the Four Thousand Island area, this boat with two children appeared on the absolutely still, golden water. It was one of those moments I will not forget.
Off the shore of Don Khon Island in southern Laos, Four Thousand Island area, the the ripples from this boat on the river were clear to see in the still, golden water of the Mekong River.
This image was taken on the lake near the Sayabouli Elephant Sanctuary in north-western Laos. On this perfectly still morning, the lake captured the most beautiful reflections of the landscape.
These working elephants and their mahouts enjoy a break by the mighty Mekong river near Pakbang, located in western Laos.
This bay, located near the well known Halong Bay in north eastern Vietnam, was an amazing sight with its seascape of limestone karst islands silhouetted against the brilliant afternoon sun.
In northern Vietnam, near Bac Ha, a traditional Sunday market is held each week. Part of this event is the Buffalo Market. Its natural setting was amazing.
Deep in the heart of the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, the Nga Nam floating market is held at the convergence of five rivers. It is a remote market that is very untouched by tourism. I spent two delightful days on the water connecting with the local traders. I will never forget the bowls of delicious Pho soup!
One of the things that has enchanted me in Asia is these amazing fishing nets. I came upon this couple fishing in the traditional way near Hoi An, located on the eastern coast of Vietnam. This image really captures the exquisite beauty of the net. I enjoyed connecting with this couple after I had taken the photograph.
I took this image from my guesthouse room window overlooking the Duoyishu Rice Terraces in Yunnan, southern China. I spent hours watching the local people walking with such grace and ease along the very narrow and slippery terrace edges. It was another world!
Laohuzui (meaning the Tiger's Mouth) is one of the best known rice terraces in Yuang Yang, Yunnan, southern China. Seen from high above, this patchwork of terraces was an unforgettable sight.
My first evening in the Yuang Yang area in Yunnan, China, I was treated to this golden sunset photo opportunity. The presence of local villagers working in their fields beautifully emphasizes the immensity of these rice terraces which have existed for a thousand years.
