This image was taken on Lake Tonlé Sap which is near Siem Reap in Cambodia. The fisherman appeared from nowhere, and for me this was an experience of timelessness.

My first evening in the Yuang Yang area in Yunnan, China, I was treated to this golden sunset photo opportunity. The presence of local villagers working in their fields beautifully emphasizes the immensity of these rice terraces which have existed for a thousand years.

This image was taken on Inlé Lake in central Myanmar (Burma). This was my first evening there. I was deeply touched by the magic of this scene; time seemed to stand still as I witnessed this man fishing in the old traditional way.
This photograph was taken at the U Bein’s Bridge located near Amarapura in central Myanmar (Burma). It is a 1300-foot-long teak bridge that crosses Taungthaman Lake. The bridge is named for an ogre who supposedly came here looking for the Buddha. The bridge is known as the longest teak span and has so far lasted two hundred years, though you can see there are definitely signs of wear! All day long, monks and nuns cross back and forth between the monasteries on each side of the bridge. There are also endless townspeople, many on bicycles, crossing to and fro. It is a fascinating sight. At the time I took this photo, it was in the late afternoon. I was in a boat on the lake feasting on the changing play of life on the bridge. These two monks captured my attention very powerfully. I was struck by the simplicity of their just walking their path.
This bridge is located on Malenge Island, one of the Tongean Islands in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The bridge was built several years before we arrived so that the children who lived in a nearby "Sea Gypsy" village could walk to their school located two kilometers away on the main island. I named this image "Trust" as the villagers, young and old alike, were undaunted as they walked across the bridge even though there were many planks missing. I would never have ventured onto it myself! For me, this image expresses the trust that we need as we walk step by step through our lives.
I took this image from my guesthouse room window overlooking the Duoyishu Rice Terraces in Yunnan, southern China. I spent hours watching the local people walking with such grace and ease along the very narrow and slippery terrace edges. It was another world!

Early one morning, not so far from Port aux Port in Newfoundland, I passed this lake. What drew me originally was the sunrise colours, but as I approached the lake, I was so taken by how the stones near the shore appeared to dissolve into the reflection of sky. What a magical moment!

I was lucky enough to be in Luang Prabang, northern Laos, when Hmong New Year celebrations were taking place. At this week-long festival, young women and men can meet and court one another. The young women spend a long time creating their dresses for this occasion and some of the men also were amazingly attired. This young girl was all dressed up but of course is a long way away from marriage. As she posed for a photograph, I was particularly struck by the power and intensity of her gaze. I had a strong sense of her being an old soul.

I met this Akha woman in her traditional dress while we waited for a bus at the Boun Neua station in northern Laos. I felt lucky to have the opportunity to photograph her as generally Akha women are very shy of having their pictures taken. Akha women are the backbone of their communities often doing most of the hard physical labour while the men stay home in the villages.
